I don’t know about you, but I find the “good” news that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner put the kibosh on a potential anti-LGBTQ executive order extraordinarily disturbing from a process point of view.
Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump helped lead the charge to scuttle a draft executive order that would have overturned Obama-era enforcements of LGBT rights in the workplace, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told POLITICO.
A draft executive order on LGBT rights that outlines how to roll back former President Barack Obama’s protections and expand legal exemptions based on religious beliefs has been circulating among journalists and worried progressive groups this week.
But two sources close to Kushner and Ivanka Trump, who have a record of supporting gay rights, said the couple favored putting out a clear statement from the president, promising to uphold the 2014 Obama executive order and stopping the momentum for the turnaround in its tracks.
On Tuesday night, the White House released a statement saying that “President Donald J. Trump is determined to protect the rights of all Americans, including the LGBTQ community. President Trump continues to be respectful and supportive of LGBTQ rights, just as he was throughout the election.”
Am I the only one who can’t find any mention in Article II of the Constitution where Donald Trump’s daughter and son in law are granted power? I must have missed that part of the Con Law curriculum way back in 1989.
Lest you think that this was just a fortunate “one off” palace coup by the Prince of New Jersey and the Duchess of Doom, sorry about this, but it looks like they’re actually more in charge than anyone else. This is frightening for all kinds of reasons.
Rex Tillerson, who ran Exxon Mobil for a decade before signing on as Donald Trump’s secretary of state, is reportedly “baffled” that the White House didn’t consult with him on its controversial executive order restricting travel and immigration from seven mostly Muslim countries.
James Mattis, who retired as a four-star Marine Corps general and supervisor of the U.S. Central Command before becoming Trump’s secretary of defense, is said by the Associated Press to be “particularly incensed” about exactly the same thing.
Both men — seasoned, thoughtful managers with bucketloads of experience and insight — probably thought that Trump recruited them to his cabinet to be trusted advisers. They may be in for more surprises, however, because there’s a good chance that Trump merely sees them as hood ornaments atop the little engine of state he’s building at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
For most of Trump’s career he has only trusted a small group of longtime loyalists at the Trump Organization, and even then he has often tightened the circle further to family members.
Advisers will come and go in the White House in coming years, but it’s likely that the only permanent confidantes and counselors to the most powerful man in the world will be his 36-year-old son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and his daughter, Ivanka Trump, 35.
It will probably be Javanka to whom Trump turns for final gut checks on major decisions, and the Tillersons and Mattises of the world may have to shuffle along.
So the Cabinet, Congress, White House staff, federal employees, the media, voters, they can all go fuck themselves as far as the vulgar talking yam is concerned. Javanka rules our world, and like everyone and everything else, the Constitution and all the norms developed over two and a half centuries can kiss their ass too.
The fact that now and again a royal whim may come out your way should not in any manner make you comfortable with these two royal pretenders exercising any power, much less obliterating the structures and lines of authority set forth in the Constitution and 228 years of history. So long, however, as the outcome of White House chaos allows for GOP congressional dreams of lower taxes, corporate greed, and misogyny, racism and bigotry are allowed to flourish, Trump & Kids will be allowed to roam free.
But when all of this turns to shit, as it invariably will, remember who stood up for constitutional norms and protections, and who sat quietly, saying nothing. There will be a reckoning, and everyone will claim to have been a patriot. That will be, as it is now, total bullshit. So remember.
