Delegate Sheila Hixson has already sent out a letter to her constituents regarding her resignation as Ways & Means Chair. It’s a very thoughtful piece, very much worthy of the moment, and so here it is.

To the Citizens of District 20:

You may have heard or seen that I have decided to assume a new role in Annapolis – I am now the Chair Emeritus of the Ways and Means Committee, where I will be transitioning and mentoring the incoming Chair, Delegate Anne Kaiser. Delegate Kaiser had previously been serving as the chair of the Ways and Means Education Subcommittee as well as the House Majority Leader. She is an incredibly dedicated, intelligent, and hard-working legislator, and I could not be prouder to work with her.

It has truly been the greatest honor to be able to chair the Ways and Means Committee for twenty-four years. I’ve been able to meet a diverse group of voices across the state and work hard to improve the lives of the people of Maryland. I hope I have made you proud in this regard.

As I come into my 41st year in the Maryland General Assembly, I will continue to try to advocate for a progressive agenda that supports working families, equal treatment for women in the workplace and at home, equal rights for all Marylanders, a fair tax system that enables everyone to make ends meet, and support for a strong education system in Maryland.

Some of my fondest and most proud times in the legislature have been when I’ve had the opportunity to mentor others, especially other women. It’s a role that I have treasured, and one that is so crucial to ensure that talent is cultivated, optimized, and – most importantly – not overlooked. I am honored to have the opportunity to continue this important work for the benefit of the new Chair.

This new role will not interrupt my service to you as your District 20 delegate. I will continue to serve with my esteemed colleagues David Moon in the House of Delegates and Will Smith in the Senate, as well as Jheanelle Wilkins once she is confirmed. You trusted me to work on your behalf when you elected me in 2014, and I will continue to serve you this term. I cannot thank you enough for your unwavering support and am unbelievably honored to be able to serve you and District 20.

Loyally,

Sheila Ellis Hixson
Chair Emeritus, Ways and Means Committee
Delegate, District 20
