The African-American Democratic Club of Montgomery County has endorsed Jheanelle Wilkins for delegate in District 20.

It is with great enthusiasm that we endorse Jheanelle Wilkins to fill the vacant Delegate seat for District 20. Jheanelle embodies a unique combination of attributes including an indefatigable work ethic and strategic outlook that we believe make her the most qualified candidate among a deep field of otherwise exemplary applicants.

As an immigrant and daughter of a single parent, Jheanelle’s lived experience makes her an especially effective representative for those most vulnerable in our society, including immigrant populations, women, ex offenders, and children. She has played meaningful roles in crafting legislation at the federal, state and local level, on a host of issues: immigration, criminal justice reform, affordable housing and reducing the achievement gap, that have positively impacted our communities. A vocal proponent of renters’ rights, Jheanelle’s advocacy recently led to the successful passage of Renter Protection Bill 19-15 which was recently signed into law by the County Council, and which will certainly affect the lives of thousands of District 20 residents, the majority whom are persons of color.
Our Club is particularly interested in engaging voices not ordinarily heard in our Party. As a woman of color, member of the Democratic Central Committee, Chair of the Voter Registration and New Voter Engagement Committees, and active member of our organization, Jheanelle has played a pivotal role in ensuring that our party and community remains poised to take electoral advantage of our County’s rapidly changing demographics.
Jheanelle’s appointment comes at a critical time in Annapolis, and we are excited by the possibilities her presence represents. We are as confident in Jheanelle as the thousands of District 20 residents who originally elected her to her current position on the Central Committee. Furthermore, we are confident she will make an effective addition to the District 20 legislative team, prepared to hit the ground running when she reaches the General Assembly. We urge the Central Committee to vote favorably on Ms. Wilkins appointment.
