Miller Announces New Leadership Team

Senate President Mike Miller today announced a new Senate leadership team. My immediate reaction is that there’s a lot of MoCo senators with new titles. Here’s the press release:

SENATE PRESIDENT MILLER ANNOUNCES NEW LEADERSHIP APPOINTMENTS

Peters to serve as Majority Leader, King as Caucus Chair and Ferguson to Chair Executive Nominations

 ANNAPOLIS, MD – Today, Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. announced new leadership appointments effective for the new legislative session. “In the Senate, we have an abundance of talent and energy,” stated Senator Miller. “These diverse and experienced Senate leaders will be a tremendous asset in advancing our State and our working families.”

Senator Miller today announced that Senator Bill Ferguson (D-46, Baltimore City) will serve as Chair of the Executive Nominations Committee. “Senator Ferguson has a keen grasp on the issues facing our state, and an understanding of the leadership we need to guide our state forward,” stated Senate President Miller. “His ability to listen, and willingness to ask the questions needed will make him an excellent chair of this important committee.”

Senator Brian Feldman (D-15, Montgomery County), has been announced Chair of the Health Subcommittee on the Finance Committee. “In these uncertain times of health policy at the Federal level, Senator Feldman’s understanding of the health insurance industry will be crucial,” stated Senate President Miller. “I look forward to his leadership in protecting the progress we have made in the state in reducing the amount of uninsured Marylanders.”

Senator Craig Zucker (D-14, Montgomery County), has been announced the Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Pensions. “Senator Zucker has a deep understanding of the fiscal issues facing our state having served a key budget role in the House of Delegates,” stated Senate President Miller. “I look forward to his continued leadership on this issue.” Senator Guy Guzzone (Howard County, D-13), has also been announced as Chair of the Pensions Subcommittee in the Budget & Taxation Committee.

Senator Cheryl Kagan (D-17, Montgomery County), has been announced as the Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on the Management of Public Funds. “Senator Kagan is a proven leader in the Maryland Senate. With her prior experience in the General Assembly regarding budget policy, she will bring tremendous knowledge to this Committee which oversees the investment and distribution of public funds,” said Senate President Miller. Senator Kagan has also been appointed to serve as on the Joint Committee on Federal Relations.

In addition to committee leadership, Senator Miller today announced Caucus leadership for the Senate Democratic Caucus. “First, I would like to thank Mayor Catherine Pugh for her dedicated and effective leadership in the Senate. I am also proud to announce the new Democratic Caucus leadership who are needed more than ever so that our diverse Caucus of Democrats continues to fight the good fight on behalf of our State and all Marylanders.”

Senator Douglas J. J. Peters (Prince George’s County, D-23) will serve as Majority Leader. Senator Peters has served in the Senate since 2007, and has served as Chair of the Prince George’s County Delegation, Chair of the Pensions Subcommittee, and Chair of the Veteran’s Caucus. “Senator Peters is a devoted father and husband, a veteran and a small business owner. He is already a strong leader in the Senate, and has the respect and admiration of his colleagues in both parties,” stated Senator Miller. “His commitment and to the State of Maryland and to the issues of importance to all ordinary Marylanders make him a great asset as Majority Leader.

“I am deeply honored to have been chosen for this position,” stated Senator Peters. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to move forward an agenda that works to create jobs and grow our economy while securing the rights of all Marylanders and protecting the most vulnerable among us.”

Senator Nancy J. King (Montgomery County, D-39), will serve as Caucus Chair. Senator King has served in the Senate since 2007, and has been a leading voice on education and the budget in Maryland for over 20 years in her roles serving on the Montgomery County Board of Education, as Chair of the budget subcommittee on education, and as Chair of the Montgomery County Senate Delegation. “Senator King is a proven and prominent leader and one of the strongest voices in the Senate on the most critical issues facing Marylanders,” said Senate President Miller. “As Caucus Chair, her ability to work with everyone and provide leadership on priority issues such as public education, school construction, early childhood issues, and job creation will continue to advance Maryland.”

Senator Joanne C. Benson (Prince George’s County, D-24), will serve as Assistant Deputy Majority Leader. Senator Benson has served in the Senate since 2010, and served in the House of Delegates for the preceding twenty years. “Senator Benson’s well known passion for public education and those who are less fortunate than others is unquestioned in the Senate,” stated Senate President Miller. “This passion will be an asset to all Marylanders as she continues her work on these and other issues facing our state in her role as Assistant Deputy Majority Leader.”

Senator Roger Manno (Montgomery County, D-19), will serve as Majority Whip. Senator Manno has served in the Senate since 2010, and has been a leading voice on labor and budget issues in the Senate. “Senator Manno’s passion for working families and the issues they face, as well as his incredible stamina and dedication will continue to be valuable for both the for the Caucus and Senate,” said Senate President Miller. “In his new role as Majority Whip, I look forward to working with him to ensure that supporting Maryland’s middle class continues to be a central focus of the Maryland Senate.”

Senator Guy Guzzone (Howard County, D-13), will serve as Majority Whip. Senator Guzzone has served in the Senate since 2014, with eight years of experience in the House of Delegates, including a term as Deputy Majority Whip. “Senator Guzzone’s ability to bring people together and find consensus is a critical asset in these divisive times,” stated Senate President Miller. “I am excited to welcome him to the leadership team and look forward to his service in continuing to move Maryland in the right direction.”

Senator Susan C. Lee (Montgomery County, D-16), will serve as Deputy Majority Whip. Senator Lee has served in the Senate since 2014, and previously served in the House of Delegates. “Senator Lee was a great leader in the House and is now a leader in the Senate on critical issues such as human trafficking and cybersecurity,” stated Senate President Miller. “The respect and commitment she brings to addressing important policy matters balanced with the warmth her colleagues feel for her will make her a tremendous asset as Deputy Majority Whip.”
