Donald Trump now proposes to repeat the atrocity of requiring members of a disfavored religious minority to register with the government.
President-elect Donald Trump’s immigration advisers could recommend a registry for immigrants from Muslim countries and countries with significant problems with terrorism, according to a top ally.
Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, an immigration hard-liner who has been advising Trump, told Reuters that transition policy advisers are weighing the merits of such a registry.
He added that the policy could be recommended as part of initial executive orders “so that Trump and the Department of Homeland Security hit the ground running.”
Trump has long embraced the policies of immigration hard-liners like Kobach meant to curb illegal immigration from Mexico and cut off potential immigration by would-be terrorists.
He said it during the campaign, and now he’s saying it again. But hey, y’know, emails and shit.
If this happens, and I will do what needs to be done to ensure that it doesn’t, I intend to be among the first to register. While King Christian X of Denmark didn’t actually do what the urban legend says he did during World War II and don a yellow star in solidarity with Danish Jews, he certainly contemplated it. From his diary:
When you look at the inhumane treatment of Jews, not only in Germany but occupied countries as well, you start worrying that such a demand might also be put on us, but we must clearly refuse such this due to their protection under the Danish constitution. I stated that I could not meet such a demand towards Danish citizens. If such a demand is made, we would best meet it by all wearing the Star of David.
Americans must resist by all peaceful means such appalling and inappropriate actions against any group. So to my Muslim friends and neighbors, I say this: we are with you, and we will not stand aside and accept any acts of persecution and discrimination by our government.
