Trump Campaign Responds To Plagiarism Controversy

The story dominating the headlines today is the plagiarism controversy surrounding Melania Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention last night. That and the fact she apparently Rickrolled the entire country in the process.

After Day One of the convention concluded, word got around fast that a full paragraph of Mrs. Trump’s speech was lifted from the remarks First Lady Michelle Obama made back in 2008.

It is pretty obvious to anybody with half a brain in their head. See for yourself.

In the wake of a scandal so obvious, the Trump campaign, surprisingly apologized for the mistake and said they would hold whoever made this mistake accountable. It was a rare show of humility from Trump and his surrogates.

Haha. I’m kidding. Naturally, the Trump campaign is denying they did anything wrong.

Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort, the guy who is supposed to be the grown up campaign veteran in the room, told CNN this morning “There was no cribbing from Michelle Obama’s speech,” while adding “these were common words and values, that she cares about her family and things like that. She was speaking in front of 35 million people last night. She knew that. To think she would be cribbing Michelle Obama’s words is crazy.”

Except  she did “crib” Michelle Obama’s speech. And while these may be common words, when they are copied and repeated almost verbatim, these words go from common to plagiarized.

Sadly, Manafort’s defense is not the most ridiculous we have heard from Trump’s surrogates this morning. Enter Gov. Chris Christie.

Christie said, and I am not kidding, that the speech was not plagiarized because 93% of it was different than Michelle Obama’s 2008 speech. Really. The Governor of New Jersey, and former prosecutor, actually said this on live TV.

Even when they are shown video of the two speeches back to back, the campaign simply lies and/or denies reality. In other words, it’s just a ordinary Tuesday on the Donald Trump campaign.

Other conservatives defending Melania Trump have pointed out Vice President Joe’s Biden’s plagiarism scandal back in 1988; because that makes what Mrs. Trump did ok, apparently. This is also a stupid defense since they seem to leave out the part where Joe Biden was humiliated in front of the country and was forced to withdraw from the presidential race as a result.

You know what this reminds me of? It reminds me of Vanilla Ice’s hilariously stupid explanation of why his song, Ice Ice Baby, was not a blatant rip-off of Under Pressure, sung by Queen and David Bowie.

So there you have it. Trump’s campaign is pretty much reduced to saying Melania Trump’s speech has the “little bitty ting” so it cannot possible be the same as Michelle Obama’s.

The 2016 election continues to amaze.
