Fresh off of a night where he finished in third place behind Trump and Kasich in four of five contests, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s campaign says he will be making a “major announcement” today at 4:00 p.m.
Many are expecting he will name his running mate and the name that is getting thrown around right now is Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlet-Packard CEO and 2016 presidential hopeful.
Cruz looks like he is trying to pull a Trump by making himself the top story after a bad night. Trump did this numerous times after poor debate performances and much to his benefit.
Personally, I am not sure what Fiorina brings to the table. Yes, she can come up with a few good one liners but that is more or less it.
She is not exactly a happy warrior either; which one would think Cruz would rather have given his reputation as an abrasive ideologue. Then again, maybe this is what it will take to win the support of more unbound delegates in the event of a brokered convention.
I assume the thinking in the Cruz camp is twofold. First, Fiorina can further highlight Trump’s awful standing among women in this country; especially married women, a constituency that tends to vote for republicans and one the GOP needs to keep in their corner to have any shot in November.
The second is that she can more freely attack Hillary Clinton and absolve Ted Cruz of being called a sexist when he does go after her.
We’ll see if this in fact what Cruz will announce and how it plays out going forward.
