The ultimate swing state of Ohio has been called for Hillary Clinton.
This is a huge win for Clinton. Yes, polls showed her ahead coming in; but they showed her ahead, by a lot, in Michigan too. And we see what happened there.
Coming off her stunning defeat in Michigan, there was justifiable fear that Bernie Sanders’ message of anti-trade would resonate in other rust belt states. Ohio being the big one given its roll in deciding seemingly every presidential election these days.
So the Clinton campaign can breathe a sigh of relief tonight as they won the state they absolutely could not afford to lose tonight. Losing Illinois and Missouri obviously wouldn’t be good news should it happen; but that just means Sanders continues to be a thorn in her side. A thorn in the side is much better than mass panic; which would be the case in her campaign had Ohio gone the other way.
