With 50 Days to Go, Congressional Leaders Line Up Behind Kathleen Matthews For Congress
Chevy Chase, MD – Four leading members of the House Democratic Caucus have thrown their support behind Kathleen Matthews as the candidate in Maryland’s 8th Congressional District best able to solve problems and move forward a practical and progressive agenda.
Congressmen Don Beyer (VA), Joe Crowley (NY), Steve Israel (NY), and John Larson (CT) announced their endorsements today. Crowley is vice-chair of the House Democratic Caucus, Larson is former chairman of the Democratic Caucus, Israel chaired the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Beyer is the incoming Finance Chair of the DCCC. These prominent Democrats join Congresswomen Anna Eshoo, Cheri Bustos, Katherine Clark, Lois Frankel, Ann Kuster and Debbie Dingell in supporting Matthews. In addition, Matthews is supported by Senators Barbara Boxer (CA), Edward Markey (MA), and Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) who also served in the House of Representatives.
Matthews has now picked up support from a diverse group of more than a dozen members of Congress, and this new round of endorsements highlights her backing in the April 26 primary by senior members of the Democratic Party and leaders in Washington.
“Kathleen has been a powerful voice for women and children throughout her entire life. She knows firsthand the challenges facing working families, and is deeply committed to finding solutions. I am proud to endorse her candidacy, and I look forward to working with her to improve opportunities for all Americans,” said Congressman John Larson (CT-1).
“As a mother, journalist, advocate and businesswoman, Kathleen Matthews has walked in many shoes and I have endorsed her because I know she will bring that range of experience to the job. Kathleen is more than a strong voice, she’s a doer and the people of Maryland’s 8th Congressional District deserve that kind of representation,” said Congressman Joe Crowley (NY-14).
“Kathleen Matthews has always shown a strong commitment to her community and in every step of her career she has tackled challenges head on to help hardworking families. I am proud to endorse Kathleen. We need her in Congress to fight for common-sense solutions to challenges like protecting our environment, enacting campaign finance reform and progressive economic policies that work for everyday people.” said Congressman Steve Israel (NY-03).
“Watching Kathleen for many years when she was a journalist, I know she understands the issues facing voters in the 8th District because she was out there everyday talking to people and digging for answers. And working with her when I served as Ambassador to Switzerland in the Obama Administration, I know her to be thoughtful and skillful at building bridges, which will make her effective in solving problems and getting things done in Congress,” said Congressman Don Beyer (VA-8).
